âYou about done?â I returned a text to Journey while I waited for Cash to finish whatever he was working on. Carter Gold, whoâd requested the last minute session, had been gone for a little over half an hour but Cash was still focused on his soundboard.
The last minute session meant I had to cancel plans with Journey. Although Cash would have easily told me he didnât need me there, things had been a little off lately at the studio.
Someone attempted to break in two nights ago and a few days before that, someone smashed the windshield of Cashâs car. There was nothing of value inside but they destroyed the windows and slit the tires, which was gonna cost him a pretty penny. I had been on Cash for years to install cameras on the building. He refused until recently, but they werenât scheduled to be installed until next week and only after Tru demanded he get them.
If anyone could force his hand, it was Tru.
âYeah, Iâm sending the files to my drive at home so I can finish mixing it there. You can head out though. Donât want you keeping your girl waiting.â
The smugness in his tone had me locking my phone and lifting my eyes. He kept his head down, but must have felt he had my attention because he added, âIn all the years Iâve known you, no woman has ever had your attention like Nee does.â
âShe doesnâtâ¦â
âThis is me, fam. Youâve barely said two words to me all night because youâve been grinning at and wearing out that damn phone.â
I would have denied it but he was right, it was him. He knew me better than anyone and was about the only person who could call me out on my shit and live to tell anyone about it.
âI thought you wanted me doing time with you.â
âDoing time?â He glanced my way over his shoulder.
âMarriage is a death sentence, right?â I joked, knowing full well Cash viewed his marriage to Tru as a lifeline.
âIf it were, you wouldnât be entertaining the idea with Journey. I do want that for you though. Just still processing that this is where you are.â
âShit, me too.â I rubbed a hand over my head and smiled at the thought before I turned serious. âI met up with my father today.â
Cash didnât speak right away. Instead, he slowly turned his chair, giving me his full attention. âSomething change?â
He knew about the other times I met with him. I signed on having his team run a full background on the guy which he insisted was about being certain of the connection between me and him. What I knew for certain was Cash never worried about the people I brought into his life. He trusted me, knowing every detail of my fatherâs life was his way of protecting me. I was his friend, his family. As much as I protected Cash, he returned the favor whenever necessary.
âA lot has changed. I want to marry Journey.â
He smirked.
